Unprecedented Thermal Efficiency

Unlike traditional Light Water Reactors that operate at lower temperatures, the SFR-1000 utilizes liquid sodium as a primary coolant. This allows the reactor core to safely reach temperatures of 550°C at near-atmospheric pressure.

This massive thermal leap is converted to electricity via twin 500 MWe high-performance turbine-generators operating at 3,000 RPM. The result? 42% thermal efficiency. More electricity generated per atom of fuel, reducing waste and maximizing economic value for the Swedish grid.

Walk-Away Passive Safety

Safety at Kallskär is defined by physics, not just mechanical pumps. The SFR-1000 is designed with a massive 1,250-tonne pool of primary sodium. In the highly unlikely event of a total station blackout, the plant does not require external AC power to survive.

Our Direct Reactor Auxiliary Cooling System (DRACS) utilizes pure, natural convection. As the core naturally generates decay heat, the sodium flows upward without pumps, dissipating heat safely to the atmosphere through four independent natural-draft air exchangers. The laws of thermodynamics guarantee a safe shutdown state indefinitely.

Dynamic Grid Stabilization

Situated in the SE2 bidding zone, Kallskär is perfectly positioned to provide massive base-load power to Sweden's southern load centers. But modern grids require flexibility.

The SFR-1000 features deep load-following capabilities integrated directly with the Nordic synchronous area. Our automated control systems provide rapid Frequency Containment Reserves (FCR-N and FCR-D), capable of responding to grid frequency drops within seconds. We aren't just generating power—we are actively stabilizing the entire regional network.

FCR-N Integration

Continuous proportional response across 49.9–50.1 Hz, capable of shifting 63% of reserved capacity within 60 seconds.

FCR-D Disturbance Response

Rapid power injection as frequency falls below 49.9 Hz. 50% capacity deployment in 5 seconds; 100% within 30 seconds.

Harmony with the Environment

Kallskär operates in symbiosis with its environment. Our advanced two-zone homogeneous MOX fuel core operates on a highly efficient 160-day effective full-power cycle, meaning uninterrupted, reliable heating and electricity throughout the harshest Swedish winters.

Cooling is provided directly by the deep, cold brackish waters of the Bothnian Sea. Through an intelligent warm-water recirculation gate, we naturally prevent frazil ice buildup at the intake during winter, ensuring seamless operations while maintaining complete ecological balance with the surrounding archipelago.
